ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

ROB EPSTEIN AND JEFFREY FRIEDMAN

Directors, Producers, Cinematographer, Editors

Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman began working as a team with their 1989 Oscar-winning documentary COMMON THREADS: STORIES FROM THE QUILT. Epstein previously won an Oscar for directing the groundbreaking documentary THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK (Sundance 1985).

Other Epstein & Friedman credits include THE CELLULOID CLOSET (Sundance 1995, Freedom of Expression Award); PARAGRAPH 175 (Sundance 2000, Directing Award); WHERE ARE WE? OUR TRIP THROUGH AMERICA (Sundance 1993). They were invited to the Sundance Screenwriter’s Lab with their experimental hybrid narrative feature HOWL, starring James Franco as Allen Ginsberg (Sundance 2010 opening night). They directed Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, and Sharon Stone in the dramatic feature LOVELACE (Sundance 2013).

They have had career retrospectives in London, Taiwan, Montreal, and Zurich.


Rebekah Fergusson

Producer

Rebekah collaborated with Academy Award-winning directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman to produce The Hell-Raiser, a short documentary for Amazon's 2016 The New Yorker Presents series.  

She co-produced and was behind the camera on the feature length documentary The Case Against 8 about the Supreme Court case that reversed California’s ban on gay marriage. The Case Against 8 premiered at Sundance in 2014 and was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary.  

She directed the feature length documentary Pelada which premiered at South by Southwest in 2010 and was called “close to pitch-perfect..." by The New York Times.  

 

 William Hirsch

Producer

Bill co-produced The Waiting Room, which humanized uninsured patients and caregivers in the emergency room of a public hospital in Oakland, CA. It was shortlisted for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2012, and nominated for Best Documentary by the Independent Spirit Awards.  

Bill has also developed and executive produced numerous other films, including Audrie & Daisy (Sundance 2016), We Are Wisconsin, The Cult of JT Leroy and Reversion (Sundance 2008). Prior to becoming a filmmaker, Bill was a plaintiff class action lawyer.
